The driveway winds to the top and opens out onto pleasant gardens, where our first impression is that of a typical Gascon maison de maître, or manor house. The pasture around the property is gentle and mellow, and the expansive gardens dotted with flashes of blue – as we see the unexpected sight of peacocks strutting proudly over the lawns. In the fields below, horses graze, and there is a pleasant contrast between the elegance of the property and this rural backdrop.
The views are dramatic, and the current owners tell us that on a clear night, a whole tapestry of stars unfolds before their eyes.
If there is no light pollution here, then there is the luxury of being only a five-minute drive from a thriving and much sought-after village, with shops, restaurants and the remains of a Roman settlement.
We enter the property through a traditional hallway. Internally the style is in keeping with the grandeur of the external architecture. Throughout we find the period features of the property have been carefully preserved, with exposed stonework, and terracotta floor tiles.
The kitchen/breakfast room is vast and spacious, with room for even the largest of families to sit around the table.
The main reception room is an impressive with a fabulous medieval fireplace in stone and beautiful terracotta floors.
Just off the hallway, there is a study area, which could be used as a downstairs bedroom.
Each room has large windows which ensure the views of the surrounding countryside are constantly drawn within.
The open staircase ascends to a spacious landing with a small terrace for the two south-facing bedrooms.
There are three bedrooms, one with spacious en-suite facilities, and a shared family bathroom and WC on the landing for the other rooms.
On this level we also discover a further undeveloped space which could be used to create further bedrooms or an upstairs salon.
Attached to the property is a delightful guest house. It has been tastefully renovated and has been recently restyled, as has much of the property, in a manner in-keeping with the period elegance of the property.
The salon boasts a feature bread-oven, a reminder of days gone by. The bathroom has been re-tiled with travertine tiles.
The property is set in just under 5 hectares of parkland paddocks and sweeping lawns.
On the front lawn there is a 12m x 6m salt water pool which is set at a discreet distance from the property and once again enjoys the same superb views as the rest of the estate.
The superb stone outbuilding offers many possibilities for development, currently used for storage, and providing ample space for the development of more rooms.
The property is fenced, which is rare in Gascony, and sure to delight animal-owners. The large paddock area contains a shelter for horses. A hangar accessible from the paddock provides a welcome refuge on winter’s nights, with storage space for hay, straw and farm machinery.
The property is in immaculate condition throughout, whether this be inside the main house, the guest house or the outbuildings.
Here at Bliss
A superb location and an elegant traditional manor house which is impressive both internally and externally. Located just a short drive from a bustling and popular market town, this property will appeal to nature and animal lovers, or anyone wishing to escape to the country. The four hectares of land will delight anyone with a horse, pony or donkey – and yet the property retains its elegant feel externally. This estate is more than a rustic farm dwelling. The outbuildings are in keeping with the grandeur of the main house, and the land around the property will also appeal to anyone looking for a rural retreat, whether they have horses or not.
We particularly loved the location of this property and its stunning architecture. A tranquil retreat in the heart of one of the most sought-after areas of Gascony.
The peacocks are of course, optional, but add a certain “je ne sais quoi” to a home which is certain to appeal to anyone looking for something a property with stunning personality.
