This is the perfect property for anyone seeking a romantic rural retreat.
This lovely old stone house is set in a riot of flowers and shrubs, and has immediate appeal from the outside, a pleasant L shape formed by the meeting of the main property and the barns; to create a sheltered terrace area to the front and a veritable haven of tranquillity, with far-reaching views over the gardens and surrounding countryside.
“FAÇADE THE COLOUR OF DAFFODILS”
The property has a bright and jolly façade the colour of daffodils, which lends a happy feel with its cheerful blue shutters; the blues and yellows, and vivid gardens, reminiscent of Monet’s own home.
The property has an auspicious past, which is perhaps explains why it feels so “welcoming” having been used during the second world war to successfully shelter a Jewish mother and her child from the Nazis.
The current owners have continued the tradition of wealth and warmth, passionate gardeners, they have lovingly restoring the gardens inch by inch, without the use of pesticides, ensuring after much hard work that the roots of any weeds have been removed, and the soil is rich and healthy. They have also planted an incredible number of plants and flowers, which have rapidly reached maturity in this fertile environment.
When asked how they undertook such a mammoth task by hand, the current owner laughs: “Inch by inch, starting at one end on my hands and knees, and working to the other.”
The benefits of a pesticide free garden are clearly felt by all, with a sixteen-year-old pet chicken (surely the oldest chicken in the world?) happily pecking around my feet.
In the style of the traditional Gascon home there is a spacious entrance hall, with decorative pebbles inset into traditional terracotta floor tiles. The entrance hall carves a central corridor between the dining-room to one side (with its large wood-burning stove) and the sitting-room on the other, also with an insert wood-burner.
Beyond the dining room, the kitchen overlooks the gardens to the front, and is bright and friendly. Natural pigments and colours have been used throughout the house, creating a warm and sunny feel. A spacious larder provides a useful storage area to the main kitchen.
On the ground floor, a large room, once a library (still with its original shelving) is currently used as the master bedroom with access to a private internal courtyard with a fountain and goldfish. This internal courtyard is a magical part of the garden, with its Italian feel, and is utterly private to the rest of the garden, with a stone wall, and ‘secret-garden’ gate.
This downstairs room could be used either as an extra downstairs reception room, or left as a bedroom. Making use of the space beneath the original staircase to the first floor, there is a WC and wash-basin.
Upstairs a long spacious landing runs the length of the downstairs hallway, from which there are five double rooms, one with a mezzanine, a shower room, and a WC.
The house has generous proportions and is ideal for a large family.
There is much scope for further aggrandisement in the adjacent barns, where some work to the concrete floor between the first and second floors was undertaken by the previous owner.
This incredible space, turned to the gardens at the front, and to the countryside to the rear, offers endless possibilities for an art studio, a second home, gîtes, etc, subject to relevant planning permissions and restorations of the roof.
At some distance to the property, there is also a second barn, requiring more important structural works, and currently used as a useful space for parking.
The current market price reflects the works required to take this property to the next level, the main body of the house offers a delightfully restored rural haven, with incredible light and positive energy, in which to live should further restorations to the outbuildings be undertaken.
A property to capture the imagination, in which to retreat from the world.

WHAT WE THINK
HERE AT BLISS
Here at Bliss we particularly like: The grand air of this L-shaped property, softened by its bright Mediterranean colours, and gardens. The courtyard garden with its fountain offers a romantic Italian touch. There are properties sold with ‘land’ and properties sold with ‘gardens.’ This property undoubtedly falls into the latter category. Once installed in the garden by the olive tree, enjoying a delicious organic lunch, sunlight dappling the terrace, it was difficult to find the motivation to leave!

NB: Our working relationships are built on mutual trust with our vendors. By so doing we are able to show photographs which clearly indicate the location of a property. This is not current practice in France. However, it should be noted in such cases that the current owner has chosen to advertise exclusively with our agency as he/she does not wish to enter into negotiations privately with potential buyers or to be contacted directly, choosing to remunerate an agency instead of handling the sale privately. All agency fees are payable by the VENDOR. We cordially invite all buyers interested in viewing a property to contact our agency. We are happy to advise and help throughout the process.
