Karen, founder of Bliss

By building personal relationships we strive to offer the highest level of service allied to one of the lowest rates of commission. Without a pyramid of salespeople to remunerate, we can offer the lowest rates on the market and yet serve you on a one to one basis, by carefully choosing the properties we market so that they meet our strict criteria.

Working closely with both local & international solicitors and the local community we can search the ideal property for our buyers, based on the criteria given to the agency in our Home Search questionnaire. Our aim is to save your time.

As a vendor, you will have the opportunity to work alongside our content editor and media specialist to bring a special “magazine” type feel to the presentation of your home.

No-one knows your home and area better than you – so let’s
share that information!

Bliss Magazine will offer regular articles of artistic, culinary or business interest, enabling your buyer to experience first-hand,
what it’s like to live here.

Unlike other agency chains operating all over SW France, we specialise on life in Gascony, and why it’s good to be here.
Creativity and originality opening doors…

‘My Background’

“As a child, I loved viewing house with my parents who were forever moving. I felt the magic of an unopened door from an early age, guessing at the potential secrets each house held, or planning which room would be mine. For a lover of houses, Gascony never ceases to amaze. Every house, every farm, every domaine, is unique. No two worlds are alike.”

“As a child, I loved viewing houses with my parents who were forever moving. I felt the magic of an unopened door from an early age, guessing at the potential secrets each house held, or planning which room would be mine. For a lover of houses, Gascony never ceases to amaze. Every house, every farm, every domaine, is unique. No two worlds are alike.

“I moved to France in 1989 armed with great romantic dreams, a BA in English Literature and a rusty ‘O’ level in French. The only memories I had of my supposed second language was being stuck in a school language lab with a language teacher whose adenoids made it difficult to determine if he was speaking French or Spanish. (He taught both).

“On my first trip to Paris by métro, I wondered at the strange guttural language reverberating up and down the carriages, wondering from which Eastern-European country it could be? I finally realised it was ‘proper’ French! It was time to begin all over again and to forget my school French and learn to speak in clipped ‘Parisian’: a very different language from the lilting French spoken in Gascony.

“I began work as a ‘bi-lingual’ (this was optimistic) sales assistant in La Défense, the business centre of Paris, where I was given at trial period of six weeks to answer a call centre hotline without any mistakes! It was a fast track to learning numbers and taking messages in French, but stood me in good stead.

“I went back to University in Paris to qualify as an English Language Teacher, specialising in teaching Business & Legal English, which led to the creation of a language training centre which I ran for ten years. During this time I taught French Criminal lawyers, Bankers and Insurance brokers, and finally French notaries – the latter of which would eventually lead to a new career in real-estate.

“In 2005 I decided I wanted a new adventure, and decided to move to rural Gascony. The choice was a lucky one, since at the time, my decision was based on little more than a random pin-prick on a map and a fascination with any department that boasted a town named Condom. The Gers felt like a different country from the capital city where I’d all but grown up and had my two children. I carried on teaching, becoming more and more involved in property sales, until one day, my notary, who knew my love of contracts and house renovations, suggested I work in sales myself.

“It was the start of a whole new career!

“I worked for a local agency for seven years, eventually setting up and running a branch of that agency in Lectoure. The agency was highly successful and during this time I personally handled the sale of dozens of properties in and around Gascony, radically changing the profile of the agency and selling some of the most lovely houses in Gascony to French, Belgium and British buyers, working fluently in both languages.

“While I was working for the agency I also completed a distance learning MA in Creative Writing, with Lancaster University. As well as a literary novel, two plays, and a collection of poetry, I also wrote a memoir about my life in France. Writing the memoir was a vivid reminder as to how many things had happened in France over thirty years, and how invaluable that experience would be to someone just arriving here for the first time.

“I also decided that having worked for another agency for so long, it was time to create my own agency.

“From this – BLISS was born.”
