Sometimes a property is just perfect; the location, the style, the feel of it as you come down the drive and see the house and garden opening up before you for the first time. It is a rare feeling of excitement in the pit of your stomach telling you that you have found something special, something unique.

This is that place, a magical spot at a great price that could so easily become a truly stunning home.

Located on a quiet country road, the approach to the property is down a sheltered private lane that curves round to open up to a park worthy of a chateau. The endless lawn, complete sense of privacy, mature trees, extensive orchard and substantial main house all conspire to make this property wonderful.

This is an atypical property for the area. Built in 1830 on the remains of a previous structure, it offers the main living space on the first floor and the service areas on the garden level. Upstairs, there is a huge attic with two additional bedrooms and extensive space for a games room or to create more living space.

A wide stone staircase which predates the house leads up to the front door. The layout inside is very simple; a wide hallway in a T-shape opens on to all of the rooms on the main floor. As you walk in, you can catch a glimpse of the lawns stretching away past the windows in the living room opposite the door and feel the sense of time not having moved forward.

The ceilings on the main floor are 4 meters high and, when combined with the long double windows in each room, give a real sense of grandeur to the house. There are original wooden floors throughout the main floor too, and several fireplaces.

The house currently offers a large living room, a dining room, a butler’s kitchen with a serving hatch opening onto the dining room. A door opens up to the hidden staircase which leads up to the attics and down to the garden level of the house.

There are two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, both in need of updating, a third large bedroom currently in use as a library, a fourth smaller bedroom and a separate WC.

Downstairs at the garden level, there is a wide hall that runs the length of the house and opens onto the large terrace on the side of the house. The first room on this level is large kitchen with fireplace and scullery.

Down the same side of the house, there are three further rooms to develop. They are currently in use as workshops for the owners’ hobbies.

On the other side, a large furnace room houses a recent boiler which uses pellets to heat the whole house. Another room houses the pellet container which holds 7 tonnes of pellets – enough to heat the house for a year. A further room is currently in use as storage.

The grounds are one of the things that really set this property apart. Accessed by a long driveway through woodlands, the gardens stretch out in front of the house and are completely surrounded by mature trees, including a magnificent cedar.

The orchard is bursting with fruit, including apple, pear, cherry and fig. A long line of grapevines borders this area, and there is a well here to water a future vegetable garden. Behind, a bamboo forest and extensive woodlands complete the almost four hectares that comprise this property.

The large outbuilding offers two large garages and two open carports on the ground floor, and extensive space to renovate on the first floor. There is a second well here, and a fenced-in area for dogs.

    Our thoughts at Bliss:

This is a one-of-a-kind property that would make a wonderful family home. There is work to do, notably in updating the kitchen and bathrooms, but it is offset by the recent economic heating system and excellent roof, and the results would be incredibly rewarding.

You can also live in the house immediately and take your time to decide what you want to do to upgrade the property.

There is no dated renovation to be ripped out here, so the renovation can easily be done while respecting the original features and feel of the house.

This house has been in the same family for over 50 years and is on the market at an exceptional price. It is the kind of property that so rarely becomes available and so many people dream of acquiring!
