Period Property from 1884 in Renung, Landes

This property is located a few kilometres outside Grenade sur l’Adour in the local community of Renung which lies to the east of the department of Les Landes.
The property is located about a hundred kilometres by car from the Atlantic coast,120 kilometres from the Pyrenees, 65 kilometres from the airport of Pau and 15 kilometres from Mont de Marsan and the N124 with roads to Bayonne/Toulouse and the A65 motorway to Bordeaux/Pau.
Grenade sur l’Adour was founded by the English in 1322 with the Adour river running through the village. The central square is one of the most important in Les Landes. There are visible traces of the village’s medieval past in evidence today, with its original medieval streets and walkways, the original heart of this fortified village and part of the « Grenadois » an area rich in architectural and natural heritage.

The property is located at the heart of a plot of land measuring over 9000m2 in a tranquil location.
The property was once a working farm with the main farmhouse built in 1844. At this time, the house would have sat in the middle of the village in the heart of the local community, producing bread, crushing grapes for wine, farriering the horseshoes, cooking essential foods and providing a watering hole for animals.
The property was built facing east and west, as is traditional for properties in Les Landes. The property has retained its original frontage with a wooden balcony running the entire length of the first floor. The date of construction is engraved above the door.
We access the main property via the kitchen on the south side. Before reaching the kitchen, we cross a section of the property which is currently in the process of being restored. In this area the current owners have begun the development of a vast open-plan space bathed in light from the large bay windows in aluminium. This space offers a number of possible uses – which may be determined later by the new owners. The area is connected to mains water and electricity offering several possibilities.
The original long entrance hall divides the property in two. On the right-hand side there is a room currently used as a study or guest bedroom. In addition, there is a dressing- room, a spacious reception/television room and a dining-room.
On the other side of the hallway we find the kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom and the staircase to the upper floor.
It is a delight to discover that much of the period charm of the original farmhouse has been carefully preserved, and that the rooms all benefit from high ceilings, and generous light. Some of the period features which have been preserved include the original red floor tiles, original fireplaces and exposed oak beams.
On the upper floor most of the partition walls have been lost. The ambiance here is an interesting contrast to that of the ground floor having a more contemporary feel with more recent modernisations.
Of particular note are the fabulous roof joists which have been beautifully restored and lend much character to the space.
The walls of the upper floor are made of pebble and brick and the main space is perfect for relaxation or games.
Upstairs there are also three bedrooms and a bathroom.
The property has retained not just its internal features but its legends too. It is said that the wood was planted with much care and that the trees were chopped according to the cycles of the moon and the seasons, the giant tree trunks raised from the ground by a system of giant pulleys.
In order to heat this sizeable property, the owners have opted for an economical wood-chip burner which is highly efficient and economical. The wood burner and silo for the wood chips are located in one of the outbuildings.
In addition to the main house the property comprises a number of outbuildings which are currently used for storage and as a garage.
A summer kitchen has been built in one of the old barns and this space has been designed for entertaining on a grand scale – a true in invitation to party!
The land around the house is flat with a wooded area. There is a pool to the rear of the property.

What would I do if this property were mine:
I would continue the works to the farmhouse which have been begun but not completed and I would plant some fruit trees on the land.
